Reading good literature to my daughter is very important to me and TJE offered this experience.On July 13, 2012 I looked at the "This Week in History" and came across George Eastman. Who is he you might be asking? He was the inventor of the Kodak camera. What fascinated me about Mr Eastman was his story. He was not born into an affluent family. On the contrary, Mr. Eastman had to drop out of school at age 14. His father died and George Eastman had to enter the work force to support his family. I was actually mopping the floor when I decided to discuss some History with my 6 year old. While mopping, I was talking to her about George Eastman and his contributions to dental clinics, theater, and technology. After our little chit chat she said "mom, I love History." I asked why and she answered "because it teaches me about the past." This is what a living book does. It brings stories to life for children and gives them an appreciation of the past. Since my daughter loves theater, I also decided to talk to her about Oscar Hammerstein II. He was an amazing lyricist and created such movies as The Sound of Music and The King and I. TJE offered a clip of the movie Sound of Music which my daughter and I watched. We also had an opportunity to watch a clip of the movie The King and I via YouTube. After viewing the clip on YouTube, we discussed what the characters were wearing, how the King was a bit arrogant, and about their style of dance.We really enjoyed watching both clips and learning about the producer of two epic movies.
Overall Thoughts:
My daughter really enjoyed learning about George Eastman and Oscar Hammerstein II. I enjoyed reading the stories to her and having discussions after about the individuals and their accomplishments. Making the pinhole camera was a lot of fun for the BOTH of us. We also enjoyed watching the clips and discussing them afterwards. A few years ago my daughter was enrolled in a musical theater class. At the recital her class sang the song Do-Re-Me. Having this previous experience brought the history lesson to life for her. Watching the videos and creating the pinhole camera made the lessons "real" to her. History could be a bit boring but with Living Books the stories are brought to life by making them relevant to the child and TJE gives the child and adult the resources to do this. TJE offered so many activities per every History lesson that one had options to chose from. I appreciated being able to review the archives and exploring all of the different options. Ms. DeMille was really helpful and replied to my emails on a timely matter. This product is complete for its purpose and I would recommend it.
