Review on Apologia Exploring Creation with Chemistry and Physics

Apologia Educational Ministries is a Christian faith based homeschool science curriculum. "What began with a single textbook has grown to include a K-12 Creation-based science curriculum, worldview curriculum for ages six to fourteen, practical and inspirational books about homeschooling, refreshing retreats for moms, and online classes from Apologia Academy."

The science program that was given to me to review was Exploring Creation with Chemistry and Physics. This homeschool science resource uses the Charlotte Mason methodology to introduce children in grades K-6 to chemistry and physics. Exploring Creation with Chemistry and Physics teaches students about the study of atoms, molecules, simple chemicals, laws of motion, electricity, magnetism, and simple machines.

This homeschool science program uses notebooking journals to help solidify what the student has just learned. The Junior Chemistry & Physics Notebooking Journal for Exploring Creation with Chemistry and Physics is designed for younger elementary students or for those with limited writing skills. Age appropriate activities include fun and easy experiments, mini books, coloring pages, Scripture copy work, and field trip sheets.

A suggested lesson plan is provided for the instructor, making the course ready to use. "How to Use This Book" page is also provided giving the instructor suggestions on how to use the science program.

My daughter and I love Apologia. I love that the homeschool program is Creation based. Every single lesson starts with a verse and coloring sheet. The copywork also involves a verse from the Bible. For example, lesson one implemented the verse "He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. Colossians 1:7"

In lesson 1, my daughter learned about volume, mass, buoyancy, matter, Archimedes, and density. "My Matter Projects" made it easy for me to see what my daughter had understood about the lesson. This activity gave her an opportunity to write down what she did for that particular lesson and what she learned. The flap books were another resource that I used to understand what my daughter had grasped from the lesson. The flap book provided the opportunity for her to narrow down what she had learned about every topic.

For every lesson, I would read a few paragraphs and then stop to ask comprehension questions. I wanted to make sure she understood what I was reading. Once we finished a few topics, we would try the experiments. The "Try This" experiments were my daughter's favorite sections in the whole book. For the first experiment in lesson 1, we played "I Spy." We looked around the room and chose items around us. We had to ask yes or no questions about the item. Each question had to describe the properties of the object.
When she learned about volume, she decided to fill up my bath tub and measure the amount of water. Then she got in the tub and measured the amount of water again. She was able to visually see that volume is the amount of space that something takes. Another "Try This" experiment that we did was the one on buoyancy. We took a pan of warm water, build a ship out of aluminum foil, dropped a few drops of blue food coloring, and added salt. She was suppose to place pennies in the ship and see how many pennies it would hold before it sank. When learning about matter, she completed another experiment found in the book. We went outside and she was to find rocks with geometric shapes. Once she found all of the rocks that she wanted, she drew pictures of them on construction paper. The final project for this lesson was making a lava lamp. From this final experiment, she learned that Alka - Seltzer does not react in vegetable oil.  When the Alka - Seltzer was placed in water and vinegar, gas formed.

We loved  Exploring Creation with Chemistry and Physics and we would recommend it.

Our Homeschool Experience:

My 7 year old really loved completing the assignments found in Time 4 Learning. From all of the subjects offered, she loved Science the best. Once she signed in and clicked on the icon for Science, she saw 3 choices, "Patterns in Nature", "Force in Motion", and "Earth and Space". Even though there was an arrow showing the suggested sequence,  she decided to complete them out of order. The first one that she was interested in was "Moon and Earth". Once she clicked on this icon, she had two other choices to choose from. The 2 resources provided were "Sun, Earth, and Moon" and "The voyage to the Earth, Moon, and Sun". When she clicked on "Sun, Earth, and Moon" the animation made it seem like she was inside of a spaceship. Here she met "Neep". "Neep" would teach her about the sun, earth, and moon. With "The voyage to the Earth", my daughter was at a carnival. Here my daughter learned about the Sun being a star and how it shines on the Earth and Moon. She also learned that Earth is a planet and has water, air, and life. As far as the Moon, she learned that it is cold and it does not shine on its own. After these two lessons, she was given a quiz.

She had so much fun playing some of the games found in the "Playground". But the only way she was able to access this section was if she completed the lesson until the timer ran out. The "Page Color" gave her an opportunity to personalize the look of the site.In the section "Parent" I was given the opportunity to change the time settings for that particular day or permanently. In the section labeled "My portfolio"I was able to find what assignments she had competed that day, week, or month. We really loved Time 4 Learning and we would recommend it.

Our Homeschool Experience:

Hands of a Child was really a lot of fun!!! My daughter loved to do all of the experiments. For each activity, I would print out the template and have her fill out the required information. For example, for the vocabulary words and their definitions, I had her glue the information onto the Lapbook. Before we would begin every lesson, I would go over the vocabulary words with her. I would say the word and she had to tell me what the definition was. She also learned the difference between a science lab and a kitchen lab. We saw the chemical reaction when mixing baking soda and vinegar. She learned why fruits and vegetables become "brown" when exposed to oxygen. We also learned why a frozen onion will not make you cry.

My daughter helping me cut the onion before placing it in the freezer.

I appreciated the planning guide. It provided a 5 day schedule of what vocabulary words she needed to learn, what books we could incorporate into the lesson, and what activities we needed to complete for each day.

She also learned what happens when we placed marshmallows in the microwave. The above picture is her numbering the marshmallows. Each one had to be placed in the microwave at different settings. After each experiment, she wrote down what she observed. Once the marshmallows cooled, we talked about the texture of each and their appearance.

With the experiment above, my daughter learned about density. She learned how the density of the water changes when salt is added. After we discussed the results, she answered the questions provided in the packet. "Why do you think the egg floated in the salt water? Do you think an egg would float or sink in the ocean?"

The packet also included very simple instructions on how to create your own Lapbook.  The questions and answer key at the end of the packet were very helpful. My daughter and I learned a lot from this packet. We loved it and would recommend it.

Our Homeschool Experience:

Both of my daughters loved the activities in this book. Even though the book is designed for younger children, I was able to include my 7 year old in many of the activities. For example, both girls love to paint. One particular morning, I had them paint to music. I played a variety of music and encouraged the girls to paint whatever they felt the "music sounds would look like." Another activity that they were able to do together was playing with the sensory table. My father in law built one and the girls have not been able to stop playing in it. They have taken their toys and hid them in the sand. I hid different shapes and asked my 3 year old to try to find them. Once she did, she had to try to tell me what the shapes were. Another activity that the girls did together was the "Salt Dough." Once they made the dough, my youngest created some shapes and my oldest spelled some of her spelling words. Learning how to sort was another activity in the book.  A few days ago, I was doing the laundry and I had my girls help me sort it out. This daily mundane task became a teaching moment for the youngest.

We also made some of the recipes found in the book. "Sweet and Crunchy Chicken" was the best. We all loved it. The recipe called for chicken breast, honey, spicy brown mustard, olive oil, salt, garlic, black pepper, panko, and pecans or almonds. The day before we made this recipe, I had cooked a whole chicken and had some left overs. I saw this recipe in the book and decided to try it out. Even though the recipe called for strips of chicken, I used shredded chicken. For the breading, I did not have enough walnuts (recipe calls for pecans or almonds) so I added peanuts and panko. It was really good!!!!!!! Another recipe that we tried was the "Chicken Bundles". The ingredients needed were chopped chicken, salt, cream cheese, chives, peas and carrots, milk, crescent rolls, butter, and crushed croutons. We did not enjoy this recipe as much as the other one but I'm not sure if it was because I used ground beef instead of chicken.

Gardening was another activity in the book. Coincidentally my oldest was involved in a summer gardening camp at the same time I was reviewing this book. One particular day, after the gardening camp, she came home with seeds in a paper towel. Because of this, we were able to do the activity "The Root of the Process".  Once the roots started growing both of my girls were able to see them  and I was able to explain how the roots receive their nutrients. This was a fun and really educational book. We all loved it and we would recommend it.

Review on Moving Beyond the Page

All About Moving Beyond the Page:

Moving Beyond the Page is a literature-based homeschool curriculum. The research - based curriculum provides projects and supports different learning styles. The strategies assist in helping children make connections between subjects using unit studies that integrate subjects such as science, social studies, and language arts from preschool through middle school. The two subjects  I was given to review were Social Studies and Language Arts. These two packages are designed for children ages 7-9. In their Social Studies package, I received "Communities Change Over Time", "A Street Through Time", and "Weslandia". With these books your child will learn about various elements of culture and examine ways that technology and progress have influenced changes over time. The Language Arts package includes "Communities and Culture", "Adventures in Ancient Egypt", and "Adventures in the Middle Ages". "Through this literature unit, your child will see that communities and cultures change over time. Each time period has unique cultural elements and important aspects that changed communities in positive and negative ways. This unit is designed to help your child begin to understand the "big picture" of history."

Prerequisites

"Able to read and comprehend chapter books on a 3rd or early 4th grade reading level"
"Can answer comprehension questions about a chapter in a journal"
"Able to write three or four sentences on a topic"

Our Homeschool Experience:

Moving Beyond the Page is such a fun hands on curriculum. We loved the two books "Ancient Egypt" and "The Middle Ages". With these two books, I would be the narrator and my 7 year old would read the bubble thoughts. My daughter loved the adventures of the Blinkerton kids as they traveled back in time and learned what life was really like in that particular time period. With this Language Arts package, my daughter was able to review how to identify and describe the characters in the books and use a Venn Diagram to compared and contrast the differences and similarities between both cultures.

We also loved "A Street Through Time." This particular book came with the Social Studies package.Since my daughter is currently learning about Medieval Times, I decided to read "The Medieval Village" and "The Medieval Town" found in this particular book. With these two stories, my daughter and I played "I Spy."   What I would do was read the captions found next to every picture and she would try to find the pictures in the village or town. We also incorporated art into the lesson. We looked at the illustrations on both pages and talked about foreground, middle ground, and background. We also discussed how the illustrator used depth to make the picture look dimensional. With the book "Communities Change Over Time," my daughter learned about the plague and she created her own coat of arms. These two packages were complete for their purpose and I would recommend them.

About Apologia:

Apologia is a creation -based science curriculum for students in elementary through high school.
Zoology 2 Swimming Creatures is its second zoology book and it is appealing to children from 6 years old to 13. "Apologia’s second zoology book will take you and your family on a delightful exploration into the wonders of the swimming creatures."Children will learn from rivers and streams to the ocean and how God equipped all of the aquatic animals to be able to survive. How on the 5th day of Earth's existence, God created millions of creatures "like the strapping sea turtles, the skulking sharks, the delightful dolphins, and the soaring squid gladly joined their fellow sea animals."In lesson 1, the child will learn about aquatic animals, the abyss, and many other fascinating topics about the ocean. Following this lesson, the child will learn about whales, dolphins, and have the opportunity to listen to some whale songs that scientists have recorded. The book has a total of 13 lessons and offers experiments and projects at the end of every lesson. These opportunities reinforce the scientific method and the concepts studies. "Among other experiments and projects, your student will try on blubber, investigate a shark’s ability to sense electrical currents, explore how whales can hear sounds that come from far away, and learn through experimentation which creatures make the best fossils."On the 5th day, God filled the Earth's waters with animals and Zoology 2 Swimming Creatures will help your child learn about that wonderful busy day.

Zoology 2 Exploring Creation with
$39.00

The Zoology 2 Junior Notebooking Journal accompanies Exploring Creation with Zoology 2. The notebook was created for K-3 or for children that have a disability. At the beginning of every lesson, the child is given two coloring pictures to complete. At the bottom of every coloring picture, there is Scripture written. After this activity, the child is given the opportunity to journal what she has learned from that particular lesson. "This creative writing exercise provides the opportunity for her to practice her handwriting." Next, she will be able to work with the vocabulary words she learned and has the opportunity to complete the copy work either in print or cursive. The copy work helps the child with her handwriting by having her write out Scripture. "Templates to complete all the notebooking assignments, project record keeping, Scientific Speculation Sheets and, of course, the same beautiful, full-colored miniature books found in the original notebooking journal are included in the junior journal."

How We Used It:

For the first lesson, my daughter had to color a picture of animals found in the ocean. After she completed coloring the picture, I had her read the Scripture that was written on the bottom of the page. Genesis 1:21 "So God created the great creatures of the sea and every living and moving thing with which the water teems..." I really loved that the lesson incorporated the Bible. I then asked her questions pertaining to some of the animals found in the picture. For example, we talked about vertebrates and invertebrates. We also discussed the difference between fresh water and ocean water animals. We also made an aquarium. Every time she learned about a particular animal, she would draw the animal on a piece of paper, cut it out, and then add it to her aquarium. When she learned about the surface currents, we tried the experiment suggested in the book. We took a casserole dish and filled it half way with water. We then sprinkled some glitter in the water. Then she placed a fan at one end of the the casserole dish and the other fan at the other end. She turned on both fans and saw the glitter flow in a circle just like a mini gyre. When she learned about the continental slope, she was introduced to the sunlit zone, twilight zone, and the midnight zone. The midnight zone is called the abyss. A few days later, she was watching Octonauts and the episode was about abyssal animals. When the cartoons started talking about the midnight zone, my daughter said "Mom, we just learned about that." When learning about whales, my daughter learned that whales are called cetaceans. We learned that the whales breathing system is completely separate from the whale's mouth. This amazing God design helps the whale to eat underwater. When the chapter talked about whaling, I was able to remind her that we had learned about this practice last year when we discussed World War 2. It was pretty awesome to be able to connect what she learned last year to what she was learning at the time. When she learned about the beluga whale, I was able to find some beluga sounds on the Internet and she was able to hear them. She also made a gray whale out of Origami paper and painted barnacles all around the chin and upper and lower jaw. At the end of this lesson, she made a whale mobile and completed the sound experiment found at the end of the lesson.

What We Thought:

My daughter and I really enjoyed Apologia Zoology 2. The book did provide a daily schedule for reading and assignments which I initially followed, however, the reading was a bit much for my 7 year old. For the first lesson, I read to her the amount recommended by the author and she was really having a hard time staying focused. This is why she started on the aquarium at the very beginning and added a sea creature every time she learned about it instead of waiting until the end of the chapter. My daughter is a tactile learner and sitting there hearing me read was difficult for her. After a few pages, I would stop and ask her questions to check for comprehension but she was a bit bored. My husband suggested for me to read the next lesson and then teach her what I had learned. This actually worked and I was pretty embarrassed I did not think of this on my own. This was a strategy I used when I taught my special education students to keep them focused. So the following day,  I went to the gym and as I used the stationary bike, I read the lesson and underlined what I thought she needed to know. The people behind me probably thought it was pretty weird to see a 30 something year old woman reading a science book. ;) I did appreciate that the schedule was flexible and this allowed me to go as deep as my daughter wanted to go with a particular lesson. The curriculum also provided an opportunity for her to record what she had learned by either drawing or writing a few sentences. The "How to Use this Book Guide" and the "Items Needed" found in the beginning of the book, was very helpful. Many of the items used to complete the activities were things that I already had at home. Even though I have not used the 50 review questions found at the end of the journal, I'm looking forward to completing the curriculum and asking her the questions. I probably will not ask her all of the questions on the same day. I would probably break them up into a few days and see how much she retained. My daughter and I enjoyed this curriculum and we would recommend it.

Homeschool Experience:

My 6 year old and I really enjoyed doing the Science projects together and playing the math games. My daughter learned how to make glue out of baking soda, skim milk, and vinegar. This concoction actually worked. There's another product that I was also reviewing and my daughter was suppose to glue a piece of paper unto card stock. The paper glued perfectly using the glue my daughter had created with the ingredients listed above. Another experiment that we enjoyed doing together was  observing how plants absorb water through their stems. The instructions asked us to use red and blue food coloring. Since we only had red, we used vanilla extract instead of the blue food coloring. Well, unfortunately this did not work out. I thought that maybe because the vanilla extract is colored, that we would be able to see the color in the stem but we couldn't. Also the experiment asked for us to use carnations. Instead of carnations, we used leaves and celery sticks. This worked and my daughter was able to see how water is absorb through the stems of the leaves and celery sticks. The "Bird Seed" experiment was also a lot of fun. At first, we thought we had done something incorrectly because the plants had not germinated but we were just being inpatient.:) For our last Science experiment we learned how a siphon works. My daughter filled one cup up with water and set an empty cup on the top of a thick book next to the cup filled with water. She then placed a plastic tube in the cup with water and the other end in the empty cup. She was able to see how the water flowed. For the Math Activity in a Bag, I selected "Double Digits." Since my daughter has been learning how to subtract 3 digit numbers with regrouping, I thought this game would be a fun way of practicing the concept. I had to modify it a bit and use 3 dice instead of 2. She would roll the 3 dice and then  look at the numbers and write down the biggest number she could make with those digits. She would roll the 3 dice again and this time she would write down the smallest number. Then she would subtract the smallest number from the largest. She would then write down the answer ( her score). After a few turns, the player with the most points would win. This game was a lot of fun!!!!

Overall Thoughts:

My daughter and I would recommend Activity in a Bag and we LOVED it. We really enjoyed the hands on activities and the math game. It was so much fun to complete these activities together. The instructions were easy to follow and I really liked the observation questions found in the Science Activity Bag. At the end of the questions, the answers were provided. I also appreciated how everything was laid out. For example, the description of the experiment, the type, and the supplies that would be needed were all well explained. We also enjoyed playing math games. Since supplies had to be purchased in order to complete some of the experiments or games, Activity in a Bag is not complete for its purpose but I would recommend it.
