Family Friendly Events

Mom helps families find local events

By SAMANTHA GHOLAR

SEBRING - A local mom has launched a one-stop shop for those seeking family-friendly things to do in Highlands County. Maribel Saunders, stay-at-home mom to two young girls, splits her time between homeschooling her children and creating a unique online world where families are able to find exciting events and activities to enjoy in the community.
Saunders was inspired by a friend from church who seemed to always be on the look out for upcoming events in the area.
"I was greatly impacted by Beth Tomblin, I don't think she knows how much. I'd see her posts on Facebook and they'd say "What's going on this weekend?. I think Highlands County needed a go-to place for events in this area," explained Saunders.
Saunders has become one of the many faces of the Macaroni Kid website, a site dedicated to providing information to local families and parents. Saunders initially got involved with the project two years ago after seeing a friend in a different county take the wheels on her own website.
"I sort of just pushed it aside and thought I didn't have the time to do it, but about a year ago I just felt like it was something I needed to consider doing again and it has worked out," Saunders said.
Since launching the site in late November, Saunders has had a great deal of traffic on Sebring's Macaroni Kid website. Though Saunders does not own the company, the page is administered and regulated by her and provides information to busy moms and dads in the Heartland.
Saunders' territory of Highlands County keeps her busy searching the many businesses and organizations for information about their upcoming events and affairs.
"I find that there is at least one thing big every month," Saunders said. "It seems like there is something happening every weekend in downtown."
The Macaroni Kid project not only provides a means for busy parents to find events to go to in the area, but it also serves as a means of finance for the stay-at-home mom.
"I do it because I love it, but it also is great that I use it as a means to supplement my husband. I love being able to stay home with our children and help other moms and dads out there," Saunders said.
Saunders invites everyone to log on to www.sebring.macaronikid.com/.
Throughout the website, local happenings, promotions, raffles and giveaways and more information may be found.
