Brookdale House is an on-line company were educational resources are published. Their curriculum is designed for children across all grade levels.

Medieval History Level 2 Cursive was the book I selected to review. The book is designed for grades 3rd - 5th which covers medieval history from 400 AD to 1600 AD. Medieval History Level 2 used the Charlotte Mason method. It taught grammar, spelling, and history -all at once.

Medieval History was divided into 4 sections: short stories, text excerpts from primary source documents, poetry, and cultural tales. "For Chapter 1, short stories that give insight into people, places, and events during medieval times have been selected." Chapter 2 contained historical essays reflecting medieval philosophy and history. The next section contained poetry from and about the medieval times. The final chapter, contained folk tales.

Following every reading section, the student would find an opportunity to summarize the story and 3 hand writing practices. In Medieval History Level 2 Cursive, the child would have written the copywork in cursive. Some of the other volumes would provide the copywork in manuscript.

The appendix provided two models for dictation. The first option provided the same writing sample as the one found in the copywork model which followed each reading selection. The second option, is a section from the reading.

Our Homeschool Experience:

Currently, my daughter is learning about influential individuals that lived during the Medieval Times. This is why I selected to review the book "Write From Medieval History Level 2" which covers medieval history from 400 AD through 1600 AD. When she was learning about Christopher Columbus, I was able to incorporate the chapter in this volume about Christopher Columbus. Since the chapter is pretty long and she is only 7, her and I took turns reading a page once a day. While reading, she learned about the 3 ships that were involved in the exploration. She created the 3 ships La Nina, La Pinta, y (and), La Santa Maria out of cardboard. While we were creating the ships, I had music from Spain playing in the background. We also talked about Spain's involvement in providing the financial support. I took out her interactive globe and showed her where Spain and Italy are located (Christopher Columbus was from Italy.). I was also able to show her all of the countries that Christopher Columbus discovered. She also wrote an acrostic poem about Christopher Columbus. And she drew a picture of Spain's flag and colored it.

Copywork

Continuing our study of medieval times, I read the cultural tale "A Tale of a Penny." This story is about an emperor whose porter was really intelligent. He asked the emperor if he may govern the city for a single month. The attendant told the emperor that he would tax individuals that entered the city according to their disabilities. The more defects the person would have, the more he would be taxed. One day a hunchbacked man wanted to enter the city. When the attendant notice his defects, he asked the hunchback for payment. The hunchback refused to pay the fee. The ending of the story: "Thus, a fellow unjustly refusing to pay a rightful demand of one penny, was necessitated, much against his inclination, to pay five."

There were a few words used in the story that my daughter did not know what they meant. This gave me the opportunity to help her find the definitions to these words.

With this tale, I was able to talk to my 7 year old about people with disabilities. And how God created everyone equally and loves everyone dearly. He does not look at the outside appearance but our hearts.

We loved "Write From Medieval History Level 2" and we would recommend it.

Our Homeschool Experience:

Having my 7 year old learn about Geography and History is really important to me. Learning about Geography will help her better understand how God created the Earth. And the study of History will solidify the fact that God was involved from the very beginning of time. A Child's Geography gave my daughter a desire to learn about His people and their culture. 

Since we had already studied about Macedonia, I decided to complete chapter 4 " Macedonia: A Land Older Still" as a review. My daughter and I talked about Alexander the Great and why he was considered "great". We also discussed Alexander the Great's death and about his empire being divided and how this caused many issues between the countries. We also talked about the apostle Paul and how he traveled to Macedonia and changed the world. 

"Skopje is the largest city in Macedonia and also its capital.On a hill high above the city is Skopje Fortress.It was built 1,500 years ago during the Byzantine Empire." Since we are currently learning about the Byzantine Empire and the Emperor Justinian, it was really easy to add this lesson to what we were already learning. My daughter made the Skopje's flag. She drew the Vardar River, the fortress, and the Stone Bridge. These three symbols represent the city and the history of Skopje.

I loved the timeline, mapping activities, the Bible verses, and the examples of delicious food from each country. I just wished there would of been actual recipes to make. I really believe this would of been a fun activity to do with my 7 year old. She loves to cook. The vocabulary words (in bold) and their definitions also helped my daughter understand the lesson. For example, she learned what the words land locked and endemic mean. We loved looking at the photo of Lake Ohrid. The questions that were written during the story made it very interesting for my daughter to read the lesson. Also the questions at the end of the lesson helped her to comprehend what she had just learned about. We really enjoyed going through the e book A Child's Geography and we would recommend it.

Our Homeschool Experience:

Hands of a Child was really a lot of fun!!! My daughter loved to do all of the experiments. For each activity, I would print out the template and have her fill out the required information. For example, for the vocabulary words and their definitions, I had her glue the information onto the Lapbook. Before we would begin every lesson, I would go over the vocabulary words with her. I would say the word and she had to tell me what the definition was. She also learned the difference between a science lab and a kitchen lab. We saw the chemical reaction when mixing baking soda and vinegar. She learned why fruits and vegetables become "brown" when exposed to oxygen. We also learned why a frozen onion will not make you cry.

I appreciated the planning guide. It provided a 5 day schedule of what vocabulary words she needed to learn, what books we could incorporate into the lesson, and what activities we needed to complete for each day. 

She also learned what happens when we placed marshmallows in the microwave. The above picture is her numbering the marshmallows. Each one had to be placed in the microwave at different settings. After each experiment, she wrote down what she observed. Once the marshmallows cooled, we talked about the texture of each and their appearance.

With the experiment above, my daughter learned about density. She learned how the density of the water changes when salt is added. After we discussed the results, she answered the questions provided in the packet. "Why do you think the egg floated in the salt water? Do you think an egg would float or sink in the ocean?"

The packet also included very simple instructions on how to create your own Lapbook.  The questions and answer key at the end of the packet were very helpful. My daughter and I learned a lot from this packet. We loved it and would recommend it.

The book that I was given to review was PreScripts Cursive Sentences and Art Lessons. In this book, students ages 7-12 are taught how to write sentences in cursive and learn drawing techniques. The sentences provided for the students are about the medieval and world history. "The book is divided into four sets of six history notes each, so upon completion, your child will have had the opportunity to master twenty- four history notes about Charlemagne, the Magna Carta, and the Hundred Years’ War, among other topics." The drawing opportunities will not only help your child learn how to use a grid, map, and many other techniques but also assist in developing fine motor skills. Our Homeschool Experience:


I was really excited when I was selected to review PreScripts Cursive Sentences and Art Lessons. We have been learning about the Medieval Times so I was able to incorporate many of the sentences and art techniques provided in this book. The first section of the book, helped my daughter try to learn how to write her letters in cursive. Since I'm wanting to use this book with my second child, I had my oldest use tracing paper to write her letters in cursive. I would place the tracing paper on top of the page with the cursive letters and tape the paper to the front cover of the book. This would prevent ripping when I would remove the tape. My daughter would then trace the letters. We did this for a few days until she became a bit frustrated. Her frustration had nothing to do with the program. I thought she was developmentally ready to learn how to write in cursive at 7 years old but maybe I was being a bit too overzealous. Since we then skipped the whole cursive lesson, I would read the sentences provided in the book and have my daughter complete the art assignments. One of the sentences that I read to her was " In 800 AD during the medieval period, Pope Leo III crowned Charlemagne Holy Roman Emperor of Europe." Since we had been learning about this particular era, we had learned about Charlemagne, the Crusades, and the Magna Carta. With this particular sentence, the art technique that we learned about was pattern. " An artist creates a pattern by repeating an element." In the drawing provided in the book, Charlemagne was being crowned Holy Emperor.Another art technique that we learned about was foreground, middle ground, and background. The drawing told the story of a battle during the Crusades. The sentence provided for this art technique was " Eleanor of Aquitaine and her son Richard the Lion - Hearted, fought the Turks for Jerusalem during the time of the Crusades, which occurred from 1095 to 1291." Depth was the next technique that we learned about. The drawing provided to illustrate the technique showed King John signing the Magna Carta. The history note provided for the handwriting lesson stated " English King John signed the Magna Carta in 1215 limiting the king's power. Later, England's King Edward III claimed to be king of France and began the Hundred Years' War in 1337." There were many other art techniques that we learned about such as illuminations and point of view. I'm sure that you have noticed me using the pronoun "we" a lot. Yes, I also learned about history and many art techniques. We really loved this book and we would recommend it.

Our Homeschool Experience:

Moving Beyond the Page is such a fun hands on curriculum. We loved the two books "Ancient Egypt" and "The Middle Ages". With these two books, I would be the narrator and my 7 year old would read the bubble thoughts. My daughter loved the adventures of the Blinkerton kids as they traveled back in time and learned what life was really like in that particular time period. With this Language Arts package, my daughter was able to review how to identify and describe the characters in the books and use a Venn Diagram to compared and contrast the differences and similarities between both cultures.

We also loved "A Street Through Time." This particular book came with the Social Studies package.Since my daughter is currently learning about Medieval Times, I decided to read "The Medieval Village" and "The Medieval Town" found in this particular book. With these two stories, my daughter and I played "I Spy."   What I would do was read the captions found next to every picture and she would try to find the pictures in the village or town. We also incorporated art into the lesson. We looked at the illustrations on both pages and talked about foreground, middle ground, and background. We also discussed how the illustrator used depth to make the picture look dimensional. With the book "Communities Change Over Time," my daughter learned about the plague and she created her own coat of arms. These two packages were complete for their purpose and I would recommend them.

Homeschool Experience: 

My daughter and I really enjoyed completing many of the activities found in the Friends and Heroes Homeschool Study. We enjoyed reading the Bible stories suggested and doing many of the activities. For example, when my daughter learned about Peter and Cornelius, the suggested activity was for a blanket to be placed on the floor and cut out pictures of different kinds of people to be placed on the blanket. I asked my daughter what she noticed about the pictures and she said "Everyone is different." I was then able to discuss with her how God made everyone different but are all equal in His sight. We also discussed where Alexandria, Egypt  and China are. One of the characters in the story was a dress maker. It was mentioned in one of the activities that Diana (dressmaker) would have probably received much of the cloth from exotic places such as China. I was able to use our interactive globe and ask my daughter where Egypt and China are. Using the globe, she was able to find out that there's a distance of over 4000 miles between the two countries. She was also able to listen to music from both countries and learn what currency they each use. Since the Romans ruled Egypt, my daughter also learned about them and their style of dressing. Using a blanket and one of my belts, my daughter dressed up as a female Roman. My 6 year old daughter also created a collage of the life in Egypt in Roman times. She also learned about all of the contributions the Romans made. For example, the alphabet, hospitals, and roads were some of those contributions. Keeping a journal about her daily adventures was one of the many activities suggested by Friends and Heroes Homeschool Study. She also imagined she was Macky's scribe and wrote about his adventures.
 

Overall Thought:

My daughter and I really enjoyed going through this homeschool study together. The suggested activities were fun and she loved to dress up as a Roman girl. Since my daughter is a kinesthetic learner, Friends and Heroes Homeschool Study kept her interested by implementing all of the fun activities. The only problem that I had was all of the printing one had to do. It was a bit time consuming and I used a lot of paper and ink. Besides this, I loved the creative writing assignments, how the Bible was being taught in such a child friend matter, and the hands on activities. Friends and Heroes Homeschool Study is complete for its purpose and I would recommend it.

Famous Men of the Middle Ages:
 BookShelf Central "is a one stop shopping for homeschooling with Tapestry of Grace." The site provides one with books that may be implemented with the curriculum. Famous Men of the Middle Ages read aloud is the book I decided to review for this school year. The guide through the "dark ages" of history explains how the world transitioned from the end of ancient times to what is now called the "modern era". Famous Men of the Middle Ages is used in Year 2 Unit 1 for about 5 weeks. Students in lower grammar, upper grammar,  and dialectic will enjoy the stories of the men in the Middle Ages. The cost for the book is $16.30.

Our Homeschool Experience:

A few months ago, I contacted BookShelf Central and asked if I may review their book Famous Men of the Middle Ages. When I was approved to review the book, I was really excited. One of the men I read to my daughter about was Marco Polo.  I know this might sound a bit comical but the reason I selected him was because of the game "Marco Polo." (Currently, I am not using Tapestry of Grace so I had to decide what men I wanted my daughter to learn about.)When Marco Polo was seventeen, he accompanied his father and uncle to the Holy Land. Since my daughter had never seen pictures of the Holy Land, I showed her a You Tube Video of an individual that had traveled to Jerusalem and had documented his experience. Marco Polo had also traveled to China and was treated well by the Chinese Emperor. It is also assumed that Marco Polo may have suggested to Columbus the voyage that lead to the discovery of America. 

The other individual my daughter learned about was Mohammed. I actually gave her a few choices and she selected this one. Mohammed was a very truthful and trustworthy individual. He was born in Mecca a city in Arabia. As a boy he would help his uncle take care of his sheep and camels. At times he would accompany his uncle to the different parts of Arabia. On one of his journeys, he learned how to ride camels really well. Since the story had mentioned the word "camel" I decided to have a lesson on camels. We made a camel out of a toilet paper roll and played trivia. I also read a fictional story about a egotistical camel that lost its good looks.

Final Thoughts:

BookShelf Central made it really easy for me to find the books I needed. The selections were broken down into Year Plan, Units, Levels, Subjects, and List. All I had to do was click on the desired option and the books would be down loaded. The book "Famous Men of the Middle Ages" not only introduced my 6 year old to History but also Geography and Science. We were able to look at our globe and see where Jerusalem, Arabia, Mecca, and China are located. I was also able to do some research on the internet and find information about camels. This book is complete for its purpose and I would recommend it.

My Homeschool Experience:

For this school year, I decided I wanted my 6 year old daughter to learn about American History. Even though Box of  I.D.E.As is geared for older children, I felt I could modify the lessons. For example, when we began our lesson "Beginnings of Naval Presence", I introduced the module by us playing the "Whaling and Exploring Game." The game introduced her to products that were derived from whales. We also watched an online documentary on whaling and talked about how common this practice was in the 1800's. This discussion lead to why whaling caused the US to have a military presence in Hawaii. This module helped me to be able to incorporate Science into the lesson. My daughter and I discussed whales and how they are classified as mammals. The second module I decided to study was "Before Becoming a Base." I introduced this module to her by us playing the game "Endangered Animals." We talked about why some of the animals are endangered and what the word means. Since we were discussing the adverse affect humans have on the ecosystem, I was able to explain to her why  the population of the black lipped oyster declined enormously. I was able to show her on our globe where the pearls were found (Hawaii) and why Europeans and Americans where enamored by the jewel. A few months before my wedding date, my husband's grandmother past away. My mother in law gave me a set of pearls that belonged to her mom. I was able to show my daughter the beautiful pearls and help her compare the difference between real pearls and faux ones. Box of I.D.E.As Pearl Harbor also provided the opportunity for me to use our globe and show my daughter where Hawaii is and the countries that were involved in WWII. Teaching my daughter about the history of the United States is very important to me and Box of I.D.E.As Pearl Harbor made this easy and fun.


Overall Thoughts:

I enjoyed supplementing my core curriculum with Box of I.D.E.As Pearl Harbor. Having all of the lessons in labeled separate zip lock bags made it really easy for me to find what I wanted to teach my daughter. Each bag had a label on it with the contents of that particular module written on it and the materials that would be needed to complete the activities. The answer keys to the activities were also provided. The extended activities helped me to incorporate hands on assignments while the web links gave me the opportunity to use educational slideshows, documentaries, photos, and things of that sort. Having discussions with her about the reason why the U.S. initially felt the urgency to establish a military presence in Hawaii was pretty thought provoking for her. Box of I.D.E.As not only educated my daughter about WWII but I was also able to incorporate other subjects such as Science and Geography. This program is complete for its purpose and I would recommend it.

Experience:

This school year my 6 year old daughter has been learning about the expedition of Lewis & Clark. The DVD provided beautiful scenes of The Missouri Water Falls as well as live re-enactments and illustrated maps. It is a very engaging documentary. While watching the DVD she would ask questions such as "How did they use the wind to sail the boat?" While the DVD was describing the mutual respect Lewis & Clark had towards each other and how this made their exploration successful, I paused the DVD. I asked her "Why do you believe their relationship had a positive reaction to their exploration?" She said "They liked each other a lot and they helped each other." This scene became a lesson on relationships and how important it is to be respectful and kind. We also discussed Lewis' and Clark's friendship with Sacagawea and how vital she was to their exploration of the west. She also learned about Thomas Jefferson's purchase of the Louisiana Territory from the French. When talking about France I was able to show my daughter on our globe where France is and all of the states that encompassed the Louisiana Territory. While looking at the globe I was also able to show her where the Mississippi River and the Missouri River are. When watching the scene about the Indians the Corps of Discovery Crew had encountered, the video had Indian music playing in the background. Watching the video enabled me to incorporate subjects such as social studies, history, science and geography. We also had a discussion about the animals the crew would of encountered. The DVD also gave us the opportunity to talk about perseverance, preparedness, and determination. We also talked about Thomas Jefferson and how he wrote the Declaration of Independence. The Historic Expedition of Lewis & Clark is complete for its purpose and I would recommend it.

Overall Thoughts:
I enjoyed watching the video The Historic Expedition of Lewis & Clark with my 6 year old daughter. This video was very educational and gave me the opportunity to teach her not only about the expedition but also about character. The video was very engaging and it provided an insight on the experiences the Corps of Discovery Crew must of endured. The photography was beautiful and watching the Missouri Falls was breath taking. The Historic Expedition of Lewis & Clark won the Blue Ribbon Winner - American Film & Video Festival Bronze Apple Award - National Educational Film & Video Festival. This is a great program and my daughter and I enjoyed watching it together.
